Old School RuneScape just received another skilling-focused update, and while the September 23 patch does not introduce a new boss or major quest, it could save a surprising amount of time for players who spend hours gathering resources. OSRS Further Gathering Efficiencies is the latest live update, bringing changes to Daeyalt Shards, Poison Dynamite OSRS gold, Hunter traps, Farming and even Nex preparation.
For Ironman players, in particular, several of these changes remove repetitive inventory management or make resource-heavy activities easier to sustain. That makes this a patch worth checking even if you are not actively training every affected skill.
OSRS Daeyalt Shards Get a Major Celestial Ring Upgrade
The headline change is the improvement to Daeyalt Shards. The Mining enhancer effect from both the Celestial Ring and Celestial Signet now applies when mining Daeyalt Shards.
On a successful mining action, players now have a 1 in 10 chance to receive double the amount of Daeyalt Shards. That does not guarantee a huge increase every trip, but over a long grind, the additional output can reduce the amount of time needed to build a large supply.
The update also improves the conversion process. Players can now choose to receive their Daeyalt Essence as noted items instead of dealing with a full inventory of unnoted essence. The setting can be changed by speaking with Noranna Tytanin at the Daeyalt Essence Mine.
For Ironmen who regularly prepare large amounts of essence, this is a small change with a very practical effect: fewer banking trips and less inventory juggling.
Poison Dynamite Is Now Much Easier to Sustain
Another major part of the OSRS September 2026 update is Poison Dynamite.
The amount of Nightshade or Cave Nightshade required to create Poison Dynamite has been reduced from three to one. In other words, the same amount of Nightshade can now support significantly more Poison Dynamite production than before.
This is particularly relevant to self-sufficient accounts that have to gather their own supplies. The change does not create a new method by itself, but it lowers the resource pressure behind an existing activity.
That makes Poison Dynamite a more attractive option for players who already have the required equipment and want to reduce the amount of time spent collecting Nightshade.
Log Basket Changes Make Hunter Less Annoying
Hunter received one of the more understated quality-of-life improvements in the patch.
Players can now build Deadfall and Pitfall traps using logs stored inside the Log Basket. You no longer have to withdraw the logs first before setting up a trap. Logs in your inventory are still consumed before the game pulls from the basket.
It is not a flashy buff, but this is exactly the kind of OSRS change that matters over hundreds or thousands of actions.
Anyone spending serious time on Hunter can remove another unnecessary banking or inventory-management step from the routine. The community has also continued to discuss the remaining Gathering Efficiencies proposals, including stackable net traps, which Jagex says are still planned for a future weekly update.
Farming Finally Gets a Useful Compost Overlay
The official OSRS client, including mobile, also received a new Farming compost overlay.
Instead of inspecting every farming patch to check its status, players can now see an indicator showing whether a patch is empty or which compost tier has been applied. The available indicators distinguish regular compost, Supercompost and Ultracompost. The feature can be enabled under the Activities settings.
RuneLite users may already recognize this type of information from existing plugins, but bringing the function to the official client is useful for players who do not rely on third-party overlays.
For Farming-focused accounts, it should make routine patch runs easier to monitor without adding another interaction to every stop.
Nex Players Get a Small but Useful Quality-of-Life Upgrade
The update also adds the ability to light a fire in the Nex bank area, allowing players to cook food there before heading into another fight.
This is especially helpful for players who frequently prepare supplies around the Nex area, and it is another example of Jagex targeting the small pieces of friction that accumulate during long-term OSRS grinds.
Taken together, these changes may not look as exciting as a new raid or major quest, but that is not really the point. Further Gathering Efficiencies is an efficiency patch, and its value becomes clearer the longer you play.
What OSRS Players Should Do After the Update
For players currently training Mining, Hunter or Farming, these changes are worth incorporating immediately. Daeyalt Shard miners should take advantage of the Celestial Ring or Signet interaction, while Hunter players can make better use of stocked Log Baskets. Farming-focused accounts should also enable the new compost overlay if they want easier patch tracking.
The bigger story is that Jagex has not finished the entire Gathering Efficiencies package yet. With more proposed changes still waiting to be implemented, September's patch may be another step toward making repetitive skilling activities less tedious without fundamentally changing how OSRS works RuneScape gold.
For now, the biggest takeaway is simple: OSRS has quietly made several popular grinds more efficient, and Ironman players are likely to feel the benefits the most.
